Cancer-stricken Jade Goody undergoes emergency operation on kidney

Cancer-stricken Jade Goody will undergo an emergency operation today to repair a blocked kidney.

The reality TV star has been unable to shake off an infection of flu virus after her white blood cell count fell dangerously low following chemotherapy to fight her cervical cancer and spent New Year's Eve in hospital.

Bosses of the pantomime production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which Jade had been starring in as the Wicked Queen, have been told not to expect her back on stage.

Doctors said her infection resistance had been reduced due to her chemotherapy drugs and she had developed a blockage in her kidney, which left untreated, could lead to kidney failure.

A source told the Sun: 'It needed to be done straight away.

Doctors will see how she feels afterwards before deciding if she can leave hospital.

'Because she is so prone to infection, every op becomes more serious than it would be for a healthy person.'

Jade, mother of two young sons, was pictured on New Year's Eve looking drawn and ill as she headed to The Royal Marsden Hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

She managed to raise a small smile for photographers, before climbing into the back of the 4x4 taking her to hospital.

Jade clutched a large carton of apple juice, some magazines to keep her occupied, and her purse. She wrapped up warm and donned furry Ugg boots to keep out the chill air.

The former Big Brother contestant had a hysterectomy in September in an attempt to stop the spread of the cancer.

However, it was later found to have spread to other parts of her body and Jade was given just a 50/50 chance of survival.
\Single mother Jade has talked of wanting to continue working so she can provide for her sons, and put money aside for their future.

She postponed her regular radiotherapy sessions in order to appear as the Wicked Witch in Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs at Lincoln's Theatre Royal.
However co-stars were informed that Goody was too ill to perform just moments before they were due on stage last week.
