Default Ian Brady refuses to help find Keith Bennett\'s body

Quote:
Ian Brady, the Moors murderer, has refused to help find the body of his last missing victim Keith Bennett.

Keith's mother, Winnie Johnson, 75, pleaded for Brady to disclose where he buried her son after police called off their 45-year search last week.

However, Brady, 71, has written a letter to Mrs Johnson vowing never again to speak of the killings – ending her hopes of finding her son, who went missing in June 1964, aged 12.

In the letter, Brady, who was jailed for life alongside his lover Myra Hindley for five murders in 1966, blames the police for rejecting his offers of help in the matter.

He wrote: "The Manchester Police, having bungled the search 20 years ago, opposed my offer of assistance to the Yorkshire Police, made six years ago, fearing that it might expose their former incompetence."

The mass murderer, who has been on hunger strike for the past 10 years, added: "Therefore, in the tenth year of the force-fed by nasal-tube hunger strike, this is my last word on the matter."

In 2003, police launched Operation Maida in an attempt to locate Keith's body. Their searches were based on information from Brady and Hindley, who died in 2002.

However, Greater Manchester Police announced last week that it was ending the search after it had exhausted all avenues of the investigation.

Mrs Johnson, of Longsight, Manchester, said Brady's vow of silence was "torture" and has dashed all her hopes of laying her son to rest.

Mrs Johnson told The Sun: "He's a complete monster. But I need him to tell me where Keith is – his information on my little boy is his last weapon against me.

"By not speaking he's putting me through more torture. With the police calling off their search, he knows everyone wants him to finally say where Keith is.

"He's the only one with the answers. In his twisted mind, by saying it's his final word, he knows he is dashing what little hope I still have."

Keith was Brady and Hindley's third victim. The pair also murdered Lesley Ann Downey, 10, John Kilbride, 12, Pauline Reade, 16, and Edward Evans, 17.

After the first three bodies had been found, Brady was taken back to Saddleworth in 1987 to help police find Pauline's remains.

Hindley died in November 2002, aged 60. Brady is still being held at high-security Ashworth Hospital, Merseyside.

Such a shame he will never be found, Ian will still have the perfect murder.
