It's all about basically who has the higher moral ground and who will look best when this is all said and done and Pete is by some distance infront of Katie at the moment. No doubt about that.

Sure both do seek attention to a degree, both woulnd't be involved with the media if they weren't but Katie really was the big reason for the break up. Like the post above says, belittled him, digs etc.
