He's functioning ok in the outside world. He can hold down a job. Is a skillfull craftsman, and has many friends.

Define geek?

Define geek?
I think he admitted to the sly one, that he was a self confessed geek in their long midnight chat.

The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc."[1] Formerly, the term referred to a carnival performer often billed as a wild man whose act usually includes biting the head off a live chicken, bat, snake or bugs.

he definition of geek has changed considerably over time, and there is no longer a definitive meaning. The terms nerd, gimp, dweeb, dork and spod have similar meanings as geek, but many choose to identify different connotations amongst these terms, although the differences are disputed. In a 2007 interview on The Colbert Report, Richard Clarke said the difference between nerds and geeks is "geeks get it done."[3] Julie Smith defined a geek as "a bright young man turned inward, poorly socialized, who felt so little kinship with his own planet that he routinely traveled to the ones invented by his favorite authors, who thought of that secret, dreamy place his computer took him to as cyberspace—somewhere exciting, a place more real than his own life, a land he could conquer, not a drab teenager's room in his parents' house."[4]

Other definitions include:
A derogatory reference to a person obsessed with intellectual pursuits for their own sake, who is also deficient in most other human attributes so as to impair the person's smooth operation within society.
A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Geeks are adept with computers, and use the term hacker in a positive way, though not all are hackers themselves.
A person who relates academic subjects to the real world outside of academic studies; for example, using multivariate calculus to determine how they should correctly optimize the dimensions of a pan to bake a cake.
A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who passionately pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance.
A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated. Persons have been labeled as or chosen to identify as physics geeks, mathematics geeks, engineering geeks, sci-fi geeks, computer geeks, various science geeks, movie and film geeks (cinephile), comic book geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, music geeks, art geeks, philosophy geeks, literature geeks, historical reenactment geeks and roleplay geeks.
A more recent school of thought sees Nerd as being a derogatory phrase, whilst Geek is simply a description. It is taken to be someone who is an enthusiast, often in things outside of the mainstream spectrum, of note is that in this definition, there is no reference to being socially inept in the slightest.

Thank heavens for Wikepedia

I take it you must be one of his geeky compatriots.

Curious - how do you know he has many friends? Have you met them?

How many unmarried 35 year-old men do you know who live at home with their mum?

As you pointed out - he has a job - so I think it odd that he doesn't want his independence and have his own place!!

Like it or not - he does fit the profile of the type of man likely to have varying degrees of psychological problems!!

Why on earth does he still stay with his Mum

can there be any other reason than sheer unadulterated laziness?

very early on he said his mum lives with him, rather than the other way around. He may have had his own place and for whatever reason his mother came to live there too. He said his mother has her own room and he has the rest of the house.

Uh no.
He admitted he lives at home with his Mum. He mumbled a bit (but its like) and then said how she has a bedroom but he pretty much has the run of the house.
He has always lived at home with his Mum. He has worked as a window fitter.
He has the same 3 friends from school. They have all been 17 year olds for the last decade and a half.
Marcus is a bad muthafukka legend in online toy painting clubs.

btw.. there is nothing wrong with any of that in itself (not counting the arrested development)
The problem is that Marcus has lived in his own 17 year old boys bedroom for so long he has created an imaginary world for himself.
Worse is that his 3 friends all feed each others fantasy.
Meanwhile.. Marcus is becoming his father underneath it all and wont be able to stop that as long as he is in that superficial fantasy world.
He would be an absolute nightmare husband and should NEVER be a father..
..unless he can get over this ****tard state of arrested development.
Which, sadly, I doubt will happen.
He really is an irrepressible 'darkhorse' with 'darkhorse' being his 17 year old boys self-assigned character.

He lives in his mom's house. His mom lives elsewhere on the coast somewhere.
Of course he has many friends. Why is that in question? He's a likable bloke. Just because he's not your cup of tea, it doesn't make him a friendless emotional cripple.

It is a shame that so many people are as yet unable to appreciate the majesty of the Irrepressible Dark Horse. Hopefully they shall see the light before the end of this year's Big Brother.
