Apparently both twitter and facebook were hacked tonight

The leading micro-blogging site Twitter went down for several hours after a "malicious" cyber-attack on its systems, the company has said.

Millions of Twitter users were unable to "tweet" (post a message) following the attack.

Twitter executive Biz Stone said: "On this otherwise happy Thursday morning, Twitter is the target of a denial of service attack.

"Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to disrupt and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users."

Members of another social networking site, Facebook, also saw delays logging in and posting to their online profiles.

The company said it was related to an "apparent distributed denial of service attack."

In such attack, hackers command scores of computers to a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

A statement on Twitter's status blog later read its micro-blogging site was back up.

It said: "We are defending against a denial of service attack, and will update status again shortly.

"Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack."

The status blog lets users know about planned outages and other issues on Twitter.

The latest incident was possibly the first-ever outage due to sabotage, reports said.
