I don't think David is mentally disabled in any way, I think he is a bit simple, not too educated, but he seems to have his wits about him!

I used to work with "differently-abled" people and they often are very naive about other people and motivations, etc. I don't see that in David. He seems very aware of most things, just doesn't have the greatest language skills, is a bit loud, etc.

He is simple and straightforward like Forrest Gump, but I'm not sure I'd have even said that Forrest was disabled!
