After a rather convincing plea that almost fooled me he then blew it harder than Bea blows a Harley and switched to his 'funny' act, being totally distracted by some minor celeb gossip.

For real, he changed his face faster than the speed of light. Even Clark Kent does not switch into Superman that quick. But he had to remind us how much he had been upset as he left the DR.

Does anyone still think Charlie is 'real' after this?

If I remember rightly. Luke and Becky were forever saying people were fake, they need to change the record.
