Default Rodrigo/Lisa/HER

I found this on DS and some people would do well to read it.

This is what he thought:

"Eu votei em você sem razões (= I voted for you without reasons). Eu votei n'ela com razões (= I voted for her with reasons)...

so, she had a really low blow with her comment, because he CAN speak English relatively well, what he lacks are the minor cultural codes which are something one only picks up with time.

If I had been there, I'd had said "olha aqui, sua vaca! vamos falar em português então... já que você é tão debochada comigo em inglês" (=look here, you cow! Let's speak some portuguese, then...since you are so debauched with me in English)

please, britain, vote LISA out!!!!!
Those who were saying he was just being rude...hope you feel silly

I'm learning Italian and knew he didn't mean it with any offence but David knows fluent Portuguese and should've known better

Thank you so much Vicky for making this point. It seemed quite clear to me that Rodrigo didn't understand how he might be seen as being rude. He looked puzzled when he was asking Sophie about it. I also remember him asking the past tense of 'throw' once before

A great post

Thanks vicky - he didnt mean to be nasty at all. It was obvious with his reaction to sophie. When Lisa told him to learn English - now THAT was rude.

Anybody could see Rodrigo did not mean that in an ignorant way, but I wouldnt have blamed him if he had, and then for her to diss his English when she cant even speak properly. I am gobsmacked

In context him/her is rude but from what i heard/saw last night only Lisa was rude by butting into a conversation that she was not party to in the first place and then to critise Rod for him english was just plain nasty - as Rod says "rude and nasty!"

I know the difference between the Portuguese grammar and the English grammar.
It was more a whole situation thing and I don't think it Rodrigo was very polite anyway regardless of the word.

But like you have mentioned I don't think that he was aware of the impact of the use of "her". Misinterpretations always happen when somebody tries to make the effort to speak another language.

Is Lisa or David ENGLISH?

When is it 'offensive' when one calls another person 'her'?????? Is it really culturally 'offensive' to call a female 'her' considered rude in UK culture?????? seriously I want to know!

And as for context, Roddy was only explaining, if one has been watching BB for as long as me, when he has his temper he doesnt talk like that, Lisa is showing her true colours!

I really want HER out !!!! I hate HER with so much pent up anger!

You may have heard the expressions

1). "who is 'she', the cat's mother?" (The moral being that human beings have names and to say she (or by association her) as a pronoun without having first used the name is impolite.)
It is polite to say "this is Lisa, give her your coat", it is impolite to say just "give her your coat" and indicate by pointing or indicating by some movement. In this latter case it would be polite to say 'give Lisa your coat'.

2). "It is rude to point". Rodrigo pointed linguistically.

What Rodrigo was saying was impolite and intended to wound Lisa. He scored a hit and she hit back. All part of the BB hurly burly. We have established that there is no love lost between Lisa and Rodrigo.

By the way, get HER out! Was that rude enough? LOL

Karma !!!!

Lisa pointed all the time!!!!!! Rude doesnt even describe how she treated Freddie , let me not get started with the poking of the finger on Freddie!!!!!! Hypocrite of her to tell a 'foreigner' about calling a female HER! Thats a low! Utter big low and she was so bitter being nominated, she had to go and say Sophie is Siavash pet!!!

Karma will show Lisa to the exit door!!!

My mother's second language is English although she's spoken it all her life she is always making the him/her mistake. I don't believe for minute that Rodrigo was being offensive.

So Lisa takes offence at someone calling her, HER, declares it the height of rudeness, yet she thinks it's ok to jab her finger in someone's head like she did Freddie? To shout 'blah blah blah blah blah blah' when Freddie was trying to talk?

That woman can't even speak proper English herself anyway, as Vicky has already pointed out.

Hypocritical cow.
