Brighton Bears have signed Chicago Bulls legend Dennis Rodman in a one-game deal. Rodman, who on Wednesday was evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother show, will face Guildford Heat at the Brighton Triangle on Saturday. Bears have an option on further matches should the experiment prove successful.
"He's probably the best defensive player the world's seen over the past 20 years," said Bears coach Nick Nurse. In a 14-year NBA career, Rodman won two championships with Detroit and three with the Chicago Bulls. "The Bulls team he played on was probably the greatest in basketball history and, after Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, he was the third most important player on that team," said Nurse. "This will be seen as a publicity stunt and, yes, we want to attract people who might not ordinarily be basketball fans. But the main reason for doing this is to give basketball fans the chance to see one of the all-time great players playing here in the BBL." Rodman led the NBA in rebounding for a record seven straight years and was twice voted the best defensive player in the league. His last NBA appearance was for Dallas Mavericks in 2000, but since then he has played in several minor leagues, most recently playing in a one-off game in Finland in November. BBC Sport |
