"Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, who is travelling to Cockermouth, said the situation was "very serious".

Assuming the Seathwaite gauge record of 314 mm in 24 h passes QC tests (against neighbouring sites, radar evidence etc), it will certainly take its
place as the largest 24 h rainfall reliably recorded by standard
methods anywhere in the British Isles since systematic recording
commenced 150 years ago, regardless of start time.
