Scot McClatchey wins gold in 200m

McClatchey won bronze in the 400m at the World Championships
Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey beat Australian swimming star Libby Lenton to win a sensational gold medal in the pool in the women's 200m freestyle.
The 20-year-old overhauled favourite Lenton, who had been targeting a record of seven golds, in the final metres to win the race in a new Games record.

McClatchey finished in one minute 57.25 seconds with Lenton back in 1:57.21.

England's Mel Marshall took bronze in an impressive swim while her compatriot Joanne Jackson was sixth.

Lenton, a specialist sprinter, led when they turned for the final length.

But she was unable to hold off the fast-finishing Scot who had been third all the way but darted home to grab the gold a year after she won a bronze medal over 400m at last year's World Championships.

Afterwards Lenton, who admitted she'd "never heard of the Scottish girl before now", insisted she was happy with her performance.

"A lot of people expected me to win but at the end of the day this is my first individual 200m swim at an international meet so I'm really, really happy."

With David Carry winning gold in the men's 400m freestyle, it was a dream start for Scotland.

The Scots have already bettered their gold medal haul at the 2002 Manchester Games where Alison Sheppard claimed the nation's only title in the 50m freestyle.

Politics student McClatchey, who goes for gold again in her specialist 400m on Monday, said: "It means so much to win a gold medal for Scotland.

"It's just fantastic. I didn't expect to win the 200m.

"I knew Libby and Mel were going to go out hard and finish strongly so I just tried to stay on their shoulders and come back at them at the end."

Marshall said she paid the price for going too fast over the first 50m.

"I would have liked to have done better than bronze but I am happy with a medal," she said.

"I didn't even see Caitlin coming but a nicer person couldn't have won."

Australia's women delivered the goods with a clean sweep in the 200m individual medley.

Stephanie Rice took gold in a new Games record of two minutes, 12.90 secs ahead of favourite Brooke Hanson and Lara Carroll, with England's Terri Dunning a commendable fourth.

Scotland's Hannah Miley was seventh and Wales' Julie Gould eighth.

Dunning had earlier failed to qualify for the final of the 50m butterfly, as did team-mate Rosalind Brett, Scot Stephanie Hill and Wales' Jemma Lowe.
