This years BAFTA nominations were announced a few days ago. Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the nominations, each with 8. Some random nominations as always with BAFTA, but that's why I love 'em! Less predictable than other major award ceromonies. I think An Education will be the big winner of the night, taking 'Best Film' (but not the Best British Film). Best director is between Cameron and Bigelow the way I see it.

No one cares? Oh well. Here are the Oscar nominations for those interested. Not many surprises. Until I see 'The Blind Side', I refuse to believe that Sandra Bullock gave an Oscar worthy performance. I mean, c'mon, Sandra Bullock? Really?! And why they've included 10 nominations for best picture is beyond me. It's all thanks to the public outcry last year about 'The Dark Knight', but I feel that listing 10 films makes a nomination seem less special.

BAFTA winners
Best Film The Hurt Locker Outstanding British Film Fish Tank Director Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker Leading Actor Colin Firth, A Single Man Leading Actress Carey Mulligan, An Education Supporting Actor Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds Supporting Actress Mo’nique, Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director Or Producer Duncan Jones Director - Moon Original Screenplay The Hurt Locker (Mark Boal) Adapted Screenplay Up In The Air Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner Film Not In The English Language A Prophet Animated Film Up Music Up Cinematography The Hurt Locker Editing The Hurt Locker Production Design Avatar Costume Design The Young Victoria Sound The Hurt Locker Special Visual Effects Avatar Make Up & Hair The Young Victoria Short Animation Mother Of Many Short Film I Do Air The Orange Rising Star Award (Voted For By The Public) Kristen Stewart I'm a little surprised at the Hurt Locker love. I think it deserved many of the awards it won, but I didn't think BAFTA would vote the same way. No way it should have been Avatar for Cinematography though IMO. |

Kristen Stewart winning rising star is a joke. She's painfully dull to watch.

Oscar ballots close it approx 24 hours, then the fate of Hurt Locker producer Nicolas Chartier's will be decided.
For those who haven't heard, Chartier sent an email urging Academy voters to vote for The Hurt Locker and '"not the $500m film". It was intended for a few selected members, but the silly idiot sent it to everyone - including his rival filmmakers! The Academy are likely to take his name off the nomination list due to this rule break. There have also been speculation of The Hurt Locker being disqualified altogether, but I really don't see this happening. Also, I was unaware of the new voting system they have this year for deciding 'Best Film'. Instead of simply voting for one film and the majority vote wins, the voters are asked to rate the films 1-10, with the highest average getting the award. With Avatar and The Hurt Locker being the 2 leading films, some voters/haters may have ranked them both much lower than what they actually think - meaning a film like Inglorious Basterds or Precious could sneak in and take gold! Watch this space... Last edited by IheartBB; 01-03-2010 at 03:53 PM. |
