It sounds like Ninja Gaiden in that respect. I remember moving straight on to that game from playing Devil May Cry 4 (which I never finished) and the difference was amazing. So much more fluid and exciting. I have high hopes of DMC5 anyway, mostly because Capcom seem good at taking criticism.

The best way to think of Bayonetta is to think of it as a spiritual successor to DMC really, It takes a lot of stuff the DMC had and makes it better plus it has GOW-esque boss battles.
I never actually played DMC4 but the demo left me unimpressed so I hope the next one takes some cues from Bayonetta really. Ninja Gaiden's a fair comparision really in terms of the depth of combat.
