I'm not sure that is entirely true. The animals would be just left to free reign with each other instead of getting killed anyway, and the farmer can do other farming.

Or get a job in the massive, burgeoning vegetarian food sector.

My silliest anecdote is McDonalds

We'd have to drive across Scotland to watch Claymores @ Hampden, but always took the kids too as good fun whole day out. Mc Donalds on Eastern outskirts of Glasgow had been caught with a rat's head. Unfortunately my mate's 8 year old had picked-up on this from watching Sky News with his dad. Everytime we passed with him it the car, he'd ask to go in for a "Rat's Head Double with Cheese Happy Meal"

Fun kid!

Nah thats not strictly true.

The chickens mass reared in sheds to meet the needs of the poultry industry could not just be put out to range and look after themselves, a lot cant even walk.

Sheep need to be moved about for pasture, as do cows. you cant just leave them. Plus the antibiotics normally pumped into them to keep them healthy are quite expensive. They would also need the same amount of care etc as they do currently. Inspections dipping, calving, lambing etc. unless of course you ensured males and females were kept separate. All males free range in Scotland, all female animals in Wales?

Even if they did leave the animals to graze, where would you put them the amount of land necessary that would need to be taken up to produce sufficient crops to replace the dietary requirements that meat provides us,is actually significantly more than what is currently in use by both crops and animal farming.
