It originates from the "Watergate" incident that happened in 1972, i dont know the full story but its something to do with someone breaking in the "Watergate Complex".

Well since then POLITICAL incidents are always referred to as -gate, but ever since the 90s people have bene using -gate with loads of events, and loads of them are used for Big Brother.
eg. Spitgate in BB9, Watergate in BB7 (Grace throws water over Susie), Mattressgate in BB10 when they all stole Freddie's mattress, Cidergate in BB6 etc....
