Isn't Dave old enough to just accept it, instead he constantly picks on Mario making him feel even more guilty then he already feels because he had to chose someone anyway.
Just remember what a fuss Dave made, when he won his S&R task and had to put someone up, searching for everyone's comfort that it was not his fault and he had to do it
