Reports that England defender Ashley Cole accidentally shot a man at Chelsea's training ground in Surrey are to be investigated, police have said.

The News of the World reported that a 21-year-old man had been hit by a lead pellet fired from an air rifle.

Chelsea issued a statement saying the matter had been investigated and "appropriate action" is being taken.

Surrey Police said no allegation had been made but they will contact the club to see if an offence had occurred.

According to reports, Tom Cowan - a sports sciences student who is on a work placement with Chelsea - was treated by the club's medical staff at the training facility in Cobham and did not require hospital treatment.

Police confirmed that they are to investigate the incident in which 21-year-old Tom Cowan was shot in the side from only 5ft away with a high-powered rifle.

He was reportedly given medical treatment on the spot, but two days later the wound to his side was still weeping and he had to have further medical attention.

It happened on Sunday February 20 when Cole, 30, who earns £125,000-a-week, arrived for training in Cobham, Surrey, with a box containing the weapon, complete with a muzzle and night-scope.

A source told the News of the World: ‘Ashley pulled the rifle from a box and started larking about with it in the changing room, not realising it was loaded. It ended up pointed at Tom just 5ft away. Then the gun went off with a loud pop and Tom screamed as this lead pellet hit him in the side.’

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti denied there is a disciplinary problem at the club after Ashley Cole accidentally shot a work placement student.

He insisted "proper action" had been taken against Cole for wounding Tom Cowan, 21, with an air rifle.

Ancelotti dismissed the notion that Cole should face severe punishment for what could be deemed a sackable offence by many employers.

"He is our player, he always had very good behaviour here," said Ancelotti. "Now, we have to move on.

"Who didn't make a mistake in his life?"

An adult pointing a gun at and shooting someone is hardly a "mistake" .....

I sat on a jury which convicted a man for shooting an imitation firearm at his wife - he was "sent down" for 2 years .....

There were moments during Ancelotti's press conference that were seriously uncomfortable, and not just because of the Chelsea's manager's perfectly innocent response to the question of whether there were 'any injuries'. 'No new ones; just Alex and Benayoun,' replied the Italian, obviously overlooking the poor lad currently having a few days off from his year-long work placement while his minor gun-shot wound heals.

The real problem arose when Ancelotti dared describe Cole as an excellent professional and a good man; one of the best he has ever encountered.

How, he was asked, could he say that about a player who brings a gun into the training ground and smuggles a girl into the team hotel during a pre-season tour, one who then lies to club officials about the girl when he discovers he has been rumbled by a journalist.

'To say he's a professional, I judge the players on the training pitch,' said Ancelotti. 'I can say, without problem, that he's one of the best professionals I've met. Outside, he made a mistake last week. Two years ago, he made a mistake. This is true. But when I talk about professionals, I'm talking about things on the training pitch.'

It was a car crash of an answer, even if nobody would dispute his view of Cole once he crosses that white line. He is a brilliant trainer, and the one Chelsea player - even the only England player - who would squeeze into a world XI.

But what Ancelotti was essentially saying was that a measure of a player's professionalism does not extend beyond the confines of a football pitch. That it matters not if their off-the-field behaviour harms the image of their club. Perhaps even the image of the game they are supposed to represent. The kind of behaviour that invites yet more accusations of arrogance and puts even more distance between the millionaire footballers and their supporters.

Such is the joy of being a football manager. there isnt really a lot the manager can do, shout at him and fine him is about all, particularly if the player in question is a good player and an integral part of the team.

The owners, shareholders and fans would soon see off the manager if he suspended him from playing and the team started losing. Damned if he does, damned if he doesnt.

Yes Cole is a twat, a stupid immature one. Hopefully the police will charge him with something suitable after completion of an investigation, endangering life by the unsafe discharge of a firearm (an air rifle is still classed under the firearms act).

Nah the pictures were supposed to have been taken last Friday

Cole was spotted partying at the opening of new bar Aquum in Esher, Surrey, on Friday, which was five days after Tom was shot but before details had been revealed by the media.

Ashley Cole will not be charged over the accidental shooting of a work experience student with an air rifle at Chelsea's training ground. A Surrey police source yesterday said it was "highly unlikely" Cole would face charges over the incident in which the defender shot Tom Cowan, a sports science student who had been on placement at Chelsea's Cobham base, on 20 February.

Police officers have contacted officials at Chelsea but are understood not to have spoken to either Cole or Cowan. Cole has been fined by Chelsea but as far as the club are concerned the matter is now closed.

Not entirely unexpected when money talks but the victim and perpetrator won't .....
