Having started their music career like a runaway train in 2005, it was inevitable Arctic Monkeys would hit the buffers at some point.
A fresh-faced indie-guitar quartet from Sheffield, they were barely out of their teens when their first album, with pithy songs about mini-cabs and nightclubs, became the fastest-selling debut in history. But the party didn’t last. The band’s Glastonbury headline slot in 2007 was disappointing and their last album, Humbug, saw them abandon catchy choruses for heavy, muscular riffs. In a bid to be seen as more serious musicians, they grew their mop-topped hair and adopted the look of Seventies rock gods. All grown up: Arctic Monkeys have returned with a rejuvenated sound All grown up: Arctic Monkeys have returned with a rejuvenated sound Singer Alex Turner has done some serious thinking — and made more regular visits to his barber — since. This fourth album, built around potent hooks and chiming guitars, reaffirms his status as one of his generation’s sharpest songwriters. From the album title (apparently chosen in tribute to Carry On films — though some worried U.S. stores have covered it up) to the accessible arrangements, it is a huge step in the right direction. Made in the same LA studio as Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, it has a sunny feel. ‘Everyone was in a good mood when we were there. The fact we were having a laugh comes across,’ says Turner. ‘We wanted the album to sound up; not too serious.’ The band — Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders — also changed their approach in the studio. Rather than piece songs together by jamming, they finished the words and music before starting work with producer James Ford. The outcome is a tight, melodic affair in which a dozen songs race by in 40 minutes. Turner has upped his game as a singer. Once noted for barking out his lyrics in short, sharp bursts, he’s now more versatile. As a songwriter, too, there are signs of maturity. Once surly in interviews and spiky on record, the four rapscallions from High Green are now well-travelled individuals. Turner moved to New York when his girlfriend, model Alexa Chung, took a job with MTV. Drummer Helders has had rap mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on speed dial since they worked together last year. With lives like these, another batch of songs about provincial dancefloors and chip shops would have had a hollow ring. The impression that this is a more thoughtful affair is clear from the first two tracks, She’s Thunderstorms and Black Treacle, both jangling, melodic workouts owing plenty to the Sixties beat boom. From that point, the songs swing between sweet, chiming pop and harder rock ’n’ roll numbers in thrall to glam-era Bowie and The Jam. Reckless Serenade and Piledriver Waltz show the band’s softer side, with their rock instincts apparent on Don’t Sit Down ’Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair and Library Pictures. When they broke through, Arctic Monkeys were hailed as saviours of British rock. But they turned out to be the last of a breed before being replaced by electro-popsters and rappers. This rejuvenation — especially if it gives homegrown guitar music a boost — is timely. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...#ixzz1OE9m0wHQ
