It's role is to brainwash the kids gradually. But it doesn't really have that affect anymore thankfully.
Well apart from Islamic schools

Probably not. I think its something that can be discussed at School rather than actually taught but I think it's also something individuals need to be left alone to make their own minds up on.

No because its a belief and sort of a 'life style'. The children can choose not to follow it after they leave if they wish.

They should be educated in different religions but it should be done academically and not in a way that enforces any particular religion which thankfully doesn't happen in most schools these days.

Brainwashed religionists are a very real thing. And I'm not just talking about cults. Talk to the next all singing, all dancing Christian outreach theatre group you see prancing down the streets. They're eighteen and nineteen years old and they aren't even like real teenagers. Or real people for that matter. It's scary.

They should get the option to learn RE and about others religions and cultures. It shouldn't be forced on them nor should to option be taken away all together.

We've had a wave of the evangelical "cool to christian" converts over the last 5-10 yeah, well they were probs already a bit christian but suddenly found god again.
They're so weird and far too happy for my liking. They're also the types that don't even seem to understand religion that much and pray to god for every little thing. Also those who thank god for helping them on tests or finding them a parking space ![]()

Yes. People can choose if they want to follow a religion or not. Let people make up their own decisions.

In my view, religious education in school should give kids a balanced overview of a range of religions, what they believe, their rituals and festivals, how they live and worship etc. Apart from that balanced view, I think education should be completely secular.
I went to school after normal school to study my own religion. It didn't interfere with my academic studies. However it was my choice, my parents didn't force me to go. |

Yes, but I was one of the only people in my class who actually liked it, so I may be biased.

Obviously if you are studying history, you have to study religion. How can you learn about the crusades or the spanish inquisition or the holocaust without talking about religion?

Don't even get me started on this!
I think schools should teach maths, English, sciences, history, languages etc. If I wanted my kids to be taught religion, the Church should be the place for it. Don't get me wrong, I want my kids to be educated on all religions and cultures and have an understanding that peoples beliefs should be respected... but to be taught just one religion is just wrong.

Religion should be taught in schools as political institutions and cultural institutions, but not as spiritual institutions.

Quand il pleut, il pleut

There's no place for religion the way I was taught it at school. I went to a Catholic school and it was very much 'you're either with us or you're with the devil'. No other religions were tolerated. There were two schools in my small town, ours and a Church of England one and we were quite literally taught they were the enemy, we should never befriend any of them as they were not 'like' us. I don't think we would have ever even have uttered 'Muslim' or 'Jew' for fear of expulsion. Safe to say my childhood experiences with religion, both in school and family have completely repulsed me from having any religious inclinations whatsoever. Having said that, I do think there could be a place for religion in our schools, as a culture and lifestyle and how it influences peoples choices in life. It has always existed and always will and is hugely influential so there's no point in ignoring that. Understanding different cultures and belief systems could lead to more tolerance at best, and at worst, well I don't see that it would be harmful if taught by the right people and in the right way

It certainly was the way I was taught as I was only taught one religion and that all other belief systems were wrong, but if all religions are taught as an understanding of culture, traditions, beliefs, lifestyles then that is not brainwashing.
