A game show in Holland has launched letting rejected asylum seekers compete to win cash prizes.

Contestants are asked questions about Dutch history and pop culture, with the winner earning 4,000 Euros (£3,500 / $5,700) to spend after being deported.

Losing participants receive a consolation prize, such as a flak jacket or a bag of tulip bulbs.

The programme is called Weg van Nederland, which translates to Out of the Netherlands, and airs on Dutch channel VPRO, according to The AP.

VPRO editor-in-chief Frank Wiering was initially opposed to the idea, reports The Daily Telegraph.

"My first reaction was that this was a terrible idea," he said. "But then I realised the show was not really mocking asylum seekers but highlighting their plight through humour.

"The candidates are not actors. They are genuine unsuccessful asylum seekers who have to leave this country within a month or two. The show focuses attention on the fact that these days, many asylum seekers being expelled have children who know nothing about their country of origin."

The Dutch government recently revealed that around 11,500 failed asylum seekers and illegal immigrants are to be deported from the country.
