Every year EastEnders delivers a sobering bombshell on Christmas Day and this year will be no different.
While families across the nation tuck in to their turkey or unwrap their presents, one of the show's living legends, Pat Evans meets her death.
Various on-screen relatives gather in these photos taken from the set of the funeral, which presumably takes place a few days after Pat's death, with her coffin carried along in traditional east end style by a horse and carriage.
As the procession arrives at church so do Pat's friends and relatives including Biana and Ricky Butcher and Janine, Mandy, Billy Mitchell and Derek Branning.
Janine (Charlie Brooks) in particular appears sullen and woeful as she makes her way into the church, while a downcast Mandy (Nicola Stapleton) has the stress of Pat's death written all over her face.
Ricky has a smile on his face - although actor Sid Owen may have been caught during a break from filming when the snap was taken.
The death of Pat Evans is rumoured to be taking place over the festive period, with many claiming she will die on Christmas Day itself.
Recent rumours centre around the character's discovery that she has cancer, which leads to a heart attack.
It's said that Pat, actress Pam St Clement. will die in heartbreaking scenes over Christmas.
According to a report in the Daily Star Sunday, she learns she is dying after collapsing in her kitchen.
Doctors perform tests on her which show she has the deadly disease but there is nothing they can do to save her, so she's sent home to die.
The newspaper claims that many of the soap's actors have been in tears as she films her final, emotional scenes before bowing out for good.
She apparently films her very final scenes this week.
An EastEnders insider told the newspaper: 'Pat’s exit will be epic.
'Many of her family, including stepson Ricky Butcher, his wife and Pat’s grand-daughter Bianca can’t handle the news. Even twisted stepdaughter Janine Malloy struggles to cope.
'But in true Pat style she puts on a brave face and deals with what’s happening to her with dignity. Viewers will see her pour one last gin and tonic from the bar in her front room before she fondly looks at photographs of her extended family.'
It was previously alleged that Pat would be killed off in a huge fire in Albert Square.
Producers were said to be planning to create a replica of the show’s B&B, which they would then set on fire at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
However, a spokesperson for EastEnders stated: ‘There has been a lot of speculation about Pat’s departure.
‘We are not going to comment as we do not want to spoil it for viewers.’
