or how did any of your friends come out?

This is inspired by a drunk heart to heart with a friend the other day where we spoke about our openly gay friend. He was bullied for so many years yet he came out in class. (he had told two friends, and his family but then he told a whole class) This was only in year 11, so there were still some immature idiots in school.

I never really realised how much courage it took him. I guess i have a better understanding now though

Did you come out in a special way, or know anyone that did?

Mum, Dad, I have something to tell you, but I know you already know anyway, because I overheard you talking about how you can't wait for me to find a lovely man and adopt... so yeah, I like boys.

Oh and then I told a few people through the power of dance, told my best friends in a dramatic 'shock annoucement' then came out to everybody on Facebook.

I'm glad it wasn't too difficult. Although I still have my moments where I do hate myself for being gay.

When I was sixteen I bunked off school and got hammered by myself at home because I still had eight cans of Dutch Gold under the bed from the week prior when we were meant to be going out [buying drink, storing drink secretly etc being a big deal back in those days].

So I started drinking at around 9 in the morning I guess and my mum arrived home abruptly [she was meant to be working until 6] at about lunchtime. So I'm sitting there plastered in the kitchen and she asks me whats going on and I literally used coming out as an excuse to trivialise the fact that I was drunk as ****.

Told her I was gay ... I wasn't gay. I was and am playing both fields but I sort of just blurted it out. It took me a year or so then to have the balls to just casually start to drop in to convorsation that oh yeah I'm not gay I'm bisexual after all.

Looking back on it that year crippled me. I basically spent a year being 'gay' before I set things straight. Keeping that bottled up was probably the catalyst for the rampant substance intake that would follow.

Mind you I'm the wussiest kind of bisexual possible. I wouldn't see a bloke as anything more than a short term, physical thing. It's basically an aesthetic attraction I have to a very small percentage of men. I know that's cliche for women nowadays to be a bit bisexual for the laugh but there we go.

I've never come out to my family because saying what I am isn't really a simple case of announcing it and I'm done, because most people don't even know what it is I suppose they don't really need to know though, they might already have an idea by the fact I never show interest towards people in that way.

Told one of my friends (some of you will know her as Lizzy) on the phone though, and it was fairly easy to describe it to her.

I have recounted my story so many times on this subject.

It's a long story but I was ousted out twice, once to my friends and then again to my family. Weird experience but glad I never have to experience those pre-coming out days again, they were so hard sometimes.

I imagine if I was gay that it wouldn't be nice to tell your family that your gay,especially if one of them was homophobic aswell.

when i was on a psych ward i grabbed this nurses dick (ya a male nurse) well i didnt grab it was complicated and he was leading me on and stuff so so he had to tell the guy in charge and he got my parents in and told them and they was like why did you do that do you like men and i was like ya hai/ that was when i was 16 and still, nearly 5 years later my mum is still telling me i need a gf bitch im gay deal w/ it

my friend and I asked our gay friend in person if he was gay, and he was like 'no I'm bi' but then on facebook he told me the truth

oh i came out to 1 person before that aswell this is gonna sound sf gay i was 14 and i just watched kemal come out of big brother and i was like wow such an inspiration so me and my friend went out and got pissed on a bridge and i told her then i woke up the next day and instantly regretted it and i went to blackpool with her the next day so it was super awkward but she didnt tell anybody and when i came out to everybody when i was 16 i was like well she already knew and they were like omg why didnt you tell me but ik other people would have said stuff

I'm not gay of course, although my friend confessed to me that he was gay and I thought that took guts because he was going through a rough patch with some certain people and just things elsewhere getting to him.

To my friends though I decided to on a night out... I was very drunk and my hair was a mess and I also decided to come out as being in love with one of my best friends.

Well it was all taken fine and it was a weight off my shoulders but looking back it was a bit cringe.

im not gay but years ago a lass i worked with came out we all knew anyway but it was very hard for her the people we worked with were very easy going me included in that and we became good friends she even ended up having a relationship with another girl we work with. she was mega worried about telling her mam and dad incase they disowned her but after a talk with me and me saying her parents wud love her no matter wot and they prob knew anyway, she did come out and they were totally fine.

I think a lot of people struggle with coming out to their parents over their friends..

One of my friends told me he was gay years ago and I was the only person in the world who knew... I tried telling him that if he came out properly, nobody would have a problem with it.. he wouldn't even think about it. He could be a right twat sometimes tbh, he was bitchy, bitter and sooo temperamental! I think he actually hated what he was and as a result, began to hate the world.

Eventually, after a long story and about two years, he took his mammy out for a meal and told her. I think he found the whole thing horrific tbh, but she was supportive and understanding and I swear he changed almost overnight. It was like a huge weight had been lifted from him: he became chilled out and happy to be himself. I think he saw his mum as the biggie to have to tell and after that was out the way, he found it quite natural to be able to tell other friends etc.

So yeah, I reckon the parents are probably the biggest problem when coming out... I reckon it takes a lot of bravery, but I think the majority of parents will be on your side.

I agree.. its something I will never understand and to be honest, any parent who acts like that should be ashamed of themselves! A parents love should be unconditional.
