Depp, Carter turn murderous bakers

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will team up as Sweeney Todd the murderous barber and his romantic accomplice Mrs Lovett in director Tim Burton's big screen adaptation of the popular musical.

'Sweeney Todd' tells the story of Todd, the "Demon Barber of Fleet Street", who murders his victims by slitting their throats while they're sitting in his barber's chair. Lovett then disposes of the bodies by baking them into delicious meat pies.

The pair become lovers as the barber seeks to exact his revenge on the villainous Judge Turpin.

'Ali G' and 'Borat' actor Sacha Baron Cohen has variously been linked to the roles of Turpin and rival barber Signor Adolfo Pirelli, although the studio has refused to comment.

According to Variety magazine, which broke the news of Carter's casting, the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical has been scripted by Johhn Logan, with filming expected to commence early next year.

A release is planned for later in 2007.

Carter, who is Burton's real-life partner, has appeared in several of his films, including 'Planet of the Apes', 'Big Fish' as well as 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Corpse Bride' (both with Depp).

The role of the diabolical Lovett was originated on stage by 'Murder She Wrote' actress Angela Lansbury and is usually played by an actress in her 50s, almost a decade older than Todd. Carter and Depp are both close to 40.

Carter has recently finished filming her role of Bellatrix Lestrange in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix', due out next year.
