Default Firm hires 7 people... who don't turn up because it's wet and they're tired.

A story I read in The Metro earlier this week...

Company bosses desperate for new staff were shocked when seven people failed to turn up for a job – because it was raining and they didn’t want to get out of bed.

The car sales firm has blamed the benefits system for giving too little motivation to take up paid work.

Yet bosses also faced a backlash after it emerged they offered just £20 a day for the two-week trial.

Seven people were accepted for telesales jobs at Car Smart, in Hersden, Kent. Yet none of them arrived on Wednesday.

One complained about the rain, while others said they were better off on Jobseekers’ Allowance – £56.25 a week for under-25s and £61 for over-25s.

Director Stefan Black, 39, said: ‘The underlying message from most of them was that coming into work wasn’t worth their time.’

The Department of Work and Pensions said: ‘The whole driver behind our reforms is to end this kind of culture.’ It insisted that universal credit made it less profitable for people to be on benefits than working.

Anyone joining Car Smart has to work a two-week trial on a basic retainer of £100 a week. If accepted full-time, they move on to the minimum wage of £6.08 an hour and commissions of up to £40. The firm insists employees who thrive could quickly earn up to £350 per week.

Sales director Carl Cooper, 26, said: ‘That two-week trial is as much for their benefit as ours. But, in the current climate, competition for these jobs should be rife.’
