MPs could be asked to vote on whether Jeremy Hunt has broken the ministerial code, Labour has confirmed.

The party wants to keep up pressure on the prime minister following his decision not to refer Mr Hunt to an independent investigator.

But any vote would not be binding and decisions on the ministerial code are solely a matter for the PM.

What does the ministerial code say?

The code sets out the standards which ministers are expected to live up to in office

It was revised in May 2010 by David Cameron

It says ministers are expected to uphold "the highest standards of propriety"

The PM is the "ultimate judge" of a minister's behaviour and decides what happens to anyone who breaches the code

Labour think Mr Hunt has breached the code in two ways

Firstly, that he misled parliament by telling MPs all correspondence with News Corp had been published

The code says: "Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation to the prime minister"

Secondly, that he has not taken responsibility for the actions of his special adviser who quit over inappropriate contact with News Corp

The code says: "Individual ministers will be accountable to the prime minister, Parliament and the public for their actions and decisions in respect of their special advisers

"

Seems clear enough to me - Hunt to go .....

Well, the vote will not succeed for Labour because the Lib Dems will support the Conservatives against any move against Jeremy Hunt despite their huffing and puffing at him replacing Vince Cable.

Personally, I don't think he should resign, David Cameron appointed him even though he knew he was very much pro the Murdochs as to this.
Therefore,his stance of support for the Murdochs shouldn't be an argument now, the only thing I will say is that it will seem odd that a special advisor who was under Jeremy Hunt, should be forced to go while the Minister stays intact.

I don't think Jeremy Hunt has done anything really wrong.There is doubt and a lot of voters will think it stinks but I think Jeremy Hunt answered really well at the Leveson inquiry to be fair.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s appearance before the Leveson inquiry into Press ethics on Thursday was a public humiliation.

His pathetic attempts to acquit himself of partiality over News Corp’s contentious bid for BSkyB made him look shifty and contemptible.

He had been asked to adjudicate after his Lib Dem Cabinet colleague Vince Cable was removed from the role after being caught in a newspaper sting saying that he had ‘declared war’ on News Corp.

To have sent James Murdoch a message congratulating him on having won EU approval for his company’s bid was an act that only a blithering idiot could interpret as impartial. Mr Hunt texted: ‘Just Ofcom to go!’ (referring to the broadcast watchdog).

Five hours after sending that message, Mr Hunt was handed the quasi-judicial role in deciding on the BSkyB bid.

Shortly after his congratulatory message to James Murdoch, Mr Hunt also texted the Chancellor about Dr Cable’s embarrassment, warning him that ‘we are going to screw this up’.

Mr Osborne, who gave Mr Hunt the first hint of his appointment to the BSkyB role, said in his own, rather smug, text message: ‘I hope you like our solution’.

These devastating text messages suggest collusion among the Tory clique that runs the Government — a collusion designed to give Mr Murdoch’s media empire what it wanted.
