Well I have been an OU student, and OH has done two degrees and a couple of diploma's with them.
The course material is excellent, and really as long as you work consistently, you will suceed. My observations though are: Negative: It takes quite a long time to get a degree with them. Normally 6 years, unless you are a brainiac that does two modules a year or something. I worked a lot harder to get a BA with the OU, than I did to get a BSc from Nottm Uni There is no student comradeship to speak of, unless you go to summer school. Most of my fellow local students were exceedingly crumbly, nerdy, or downright odd. Positives Excellent course material, very accessible Summer school is FANTASTIC! be sure to choose units which make them compulsory! OH loves the OU and has just embarked on a Masters with them. |

I did a Bsc (Hons) degree in IT and Computing with the OU from 1997 - 2001.
I would echo everything that ROB said, plus the fact that there is now some software called "FirstClass" that does online conferencing about courses - it's a lifesaver because it gives you people to talk to and stops you feeling so isloated. What courses are you thinking of doing? |

bbceleb, you are right AND wrong! It is Frank, but he isn't at ALL laid back, believe me. He has never acquired the art of chilling his boots.
But well done anyway! ![]() |

The courses I did were:
1997: MST121 and L130 1998: M206 1999: T223 and T293 2000: T305 and MT262 2001: M301 and MDST242 Some of these courses have been updated and replaced with newer ones (especially T293) but if you let me know what you're thinking of doing, I can give you more specific information. I got distinctions and Pass 2's on them which meant I ended up with a 1st. It has not directly helped my career because I decided not to work in IT (!) but it was beneficial in many other ways like group-working, time-management etc. |
