Default LOST season 5 premier - "Because you left"

Can someone please explain the monstrosity I just witnessed? I might just be incredibly thick or something, but I'm ridiculously confused and very underwhelmed...

The just kept constantly time jumping and it's like your supposed to know when and where they are. Then that Daniel Ferridey (i think) lied to Sawyer about not being able to change what happens. And does Sawyer, Juliet and Co think the people on the helicopter are dead?

Oh right. The time jumps don't last for too long, they give little hints as to where they are (like the bright light in the sky = when Locke was banging on the hatch after Boone's death). And Faraday didn't lie, they can't change anything. An I can't remember, I think they suspect that the people on the helicopter died but aren't really sure

Ok cool, what did you think of the first episode, does it improve?

It was alright, probably the weakest opening episode of all the seasons though. Season 5 has a couple of really good episodes in the middle and then really picks up towards the end
