The Mother of reality TV against the manipulated/entertainment show
Both shows have declined in ratings considerably. Any opinions on whether one will outlast the other? Anyone think BB/CBB would match X Factor with viewing figures if it was on itv? |

yes its the same format but when you see someone sing you have seen them all - boring - at least wth BB you get new people and there is some sort of variety - x factor is so boring.

X Factor is still getting 9 million viewers.
Its still a massive show. BB cant even break to 2 million for an average highlight show anymore. BB would be crap on ITV aswell, ITV is to pc for it. I think X Factor will be on tv long after Big Brother. Last edited by daniel-lewis-1985; 19-08-2012 at 02:41 PM. |

All television shows are down in ratings. People just don't watch as much television anymore.

The X Factor will get cancelled before BB, mainly due to the channel it's on. If it goes below 5m viewers per ep ITV will cancel it, whereas C5 are a smaller channel and are happy with anything above 1m every night.

Simon Cowell is not stupid - he would rather the X Factor go off our screens with some credibility left. Last year following the dive in ratings he was quoted as saying "I'd rather fall off the cliff on numbers than deteriorate slowly." and in March this year he said he would consider scrapping the show next year: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s103/...r-in-2013.html ...and with the 2012 ratings being even lower I believe it is definitely a possibility.
C5/Endemol, however, have no shame and will happily squeeze as much as they can out of Big Brother. I can honestly see them keeping it going - and if not normal BB then CBB - for a good few years yet. It will be in a pretty desperate state by that point but it could still definitely happen. Afterall they signed a two year deal after BB12 which was nearly down to 1m per night so clearly they're quite happy with what Big Brother is giving them. |

I think it's a very real possibility The X Factor could end permanently before Big Brother.
As Richard has pointed out, Simon Cowell has claimed he'd rather axe the show than let the ratings slide, and X Factor's contract is up at the end of next year's series - so if it continues to get embarrassing ratings like last night's episode did then it might not be renewed. And unless Cowell has something up his sleeve, or he has ITV wound just a bit too tightly around his little finger, they could swoop in and buy The Voice from the BBC next year, especially if they manage to boost the ratings for its live show stage. ITV has shown interest in The Voice before. On the other hand, ITV could be happy enough with The X Factor's slipping ratings to renew it for another couple of years - and now Celebrity Big Brother's dropped below 2million viewers, Channel 5 might not be so interested in keeping it. |

I think TXF might pick up in ratings... There wasn't as much news around it this year, If it gets publicity it will pick up to 10-12Million... Especially when it starts to get colder and people stay in

Big Brother will last longer.
The X Factor will be cancelled if viewing figures fall much more, I'd say once it hits around 4 million it'll be on the way out. It will no doubt be replaced by another Cowell show nobody loses really. Look at it this way, a few years ago when someone won the X Factor, everybody knew their name and they were around long after the series ended, thats not the case now. Whereas with BB, it will keep going until nobody watches |

Tbh I think Channel 5 will worm their way in and buy X Factor on the next few years. They'll get someone like Frankie Cocozza to host and have Celebrity X Factor. Seriously!

The question of the OP though is not very fair. BB started in 2000 while TXF started in 2004. If BB ends next year and TXF ends in 2014, BB would of been going on longer than TXF.

Is it? Talent shows with the public voting have been on TV since the 60s (Opportunity Knocks / New Faces).

X factor is down a lot. % wise it has been down a lot in the last few years, more so than BB decline. 2 years ago, X Factor was getting 15m, now it launched with 8.7m, that is a big drop, still a big number, but a big drop. In the last 2 years, BB has gone from 2.7m to 2.0m. A smaller % drop in 2 years. X Factor could decline further below 8m. I feel people are starting to get annoyed by it. Give it another 4 years (to bring it up to the same amount of years BB has been on for), it will be sub 6m. |
