Withdrawing a comment is like trying to unring a bell. It can't be done and what's more it makes you look foolish and weak. Politicians (in all parties) do it all the time against better advice. Clegg should have the courage of his convictions and stand by his comment.

Wrong again. Being truthful is always the best way. However some people dont always say things exactly how they mean them and the words come out wrong. Its arrogant not to ever try and retract and rewrite something you didnt quite mean. everyone makes mistakes, especially when you have many political enemies hurling endless questions at you, then every word is scrutinised by the worlds media and twisted by knaves. its more humble decent and honest to admit it. Rather than pretending to be impervious to error, which is of course an arrogant lie.

so which part of Clegg's original comments were untruthful? What he said was spot on. What he said was absolutely in line with the Lib Dem ideology about gay marriage. He didn't retract the statement because it's not what Lib Dem's believe, he retracted it because of the backlash. that is cowardly and wrong.

His apology is the mistake, not his original statement.
