The Libertines were an English rock band, formed in London in 1997 by frontmen Carl Barât (vocals/guitar) and Pete Doherty (vocals/guitar). The band, centred on the songwriting partnership of Barat and Doherty, also included John Hassall (bass) and Gary Powell (drums) for most of its recording career. The band was part of the garage rock revival and spearheaded the movement in the UK.
The band gained some notoriety in the early 2000s. Although their mainstream success was initially limited, their profile soon grew, culminating in a No.*2 single and No.*1 album on the UK Charts. In December 2004, their self-titled second album was voted the second best album of the year by NME magazine. Both of their full-length LPs were produced by Mick Jones, of the British punk band The Clash. ![]() |

More than a touch. Nah!!! I never got the attraction with this lot. Dont give me a band that cant be bothered to tune their instruments and act all rock and roll. Its been dnoe many times before and by better rock stars and musicians.

Pete Doherty has been questioned by French authorities after the theft of a trolley of goods from a train.
Ten years ago, The Libertines released 'Up The Bracket'. It's a sobering reminder of days gone by, with the atmosphere surrounding British guitar music standing in stark contrast to the buoyancy it enjoyed a decade ago. So Clash thought it only pertinent to catch up with Pete Doherty. Recently announcing a string of solo shows across Scotland, the songwriter was forced to cancel dates in Inverness and Glasgow due to "unforeseen circumstances". It seems that those circumstances, though, might include a bit of theft from a French railway company. Posting on his website the Albion Rooms, Pete Doherty explained that he wanted to go see Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in Toulouse but lacked transport. "the train is out of the question. I am currently in discussion with SNCF regarding my accountability for a missing trolley-load of staff uniforms(gaberdine wool mind you), cold meats, cutlery". A reminder of better days... ![]() |
