I think it's because it starts with take (as in subtract or minus) 1000. So take 1,000 from 0 and you start with -1000. Add the rest and you get 4,100.

Q10. (in your head!) Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

1000 + 40 = 1040
1040 + 1000 = 2040
2040 + 30 = 2070
2070 + 1000 = 3070
3070 + 20 = 3090
3090 + 1000 = 4090
4090 + 10 = 4100

My first answer came out as 5100, then 5000, only got the right answer on the third go.

Hah, I think that qualifies as right also.

Ah clever, but photography developing fluid isn't water - though that is part of it.
