Quand il pleut, il pleut
|
On this day 65 years ago, the world mourned the loss of an iconic spiritual leader whose influence is still felt globally. On January 30 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was fatally shot three times at point blank range as he entered a prayer meeting in Delhi. A much-loved politician and leader, Gandhi fronted India's independence movement for decades in the early 20th century. He preached a philosophy of peaceful protest through fasting and non-violent civil disobedience against British rule, seeking to improve the lives of millions of his countrymen. He was gunned down by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse. Opponents of Gandhi, including Gopal Godse, brother and co-conspirator of the assassin, claimed Gandhi's insistence on non-violence was 'part of a plot to allow Hindus to be slaughtered by Muslims'. In a Pathe video charting the immediate aftermath of the assassination the 78-year-old is described as a 'god'. A voiceover says: "When vast throngs crowded Delhi's Birla House, urging him to break his fast, few imagined an assassin would strike near this spot 11 days later. "To the simple, trusting multitudes of India, this frail figure was a god. In his 40 years campaigning for freedom, his creed was peace." |
