That's a bit harsh! I'm guessing he was told strictly not to go on anything else, or has he been given warnings before about not doing it and he still did it? I think it's a bit wrong if he just went on it briefly as a one-off and was fired!

Seems harsh but if he / she had been warned not to do it before then what do you expect?
If it was during a break though then that is harsh.

It depends on what he signed in terms of acceptable use when he started the job. Our company has a strict policy but that said it is a bit harsh without any previous warnings. Depending on how long he has worked there he has the right to appeal the decision he first needs to put his complaint in writing and see what comes of that.

well it does seem harsh but the employer is paying the person to work, not catch up on BB gossip..

Thats not why they provide the use of a computer in the workplace...

I do think the sack is too harsh.. maybe a final warning would have been enough.. but maybe he was alreay on his last legs??

Its a weird one.Where I work you can go on E bay to buy things ,but not sell. You can go on BBC sites but not forums. This is all in the company policy and is a sackable offence if not followed.

However to be given the sack and not a warning , I would imagine that your mate was not very welll liked in the workplace.

Each organisation will have rules about what sites you can go on and when. Big Brother is classed as adult, along with porn sites. The use of pornography in the workplace violates equal opportunities policies and anti-discrimination regulations, so these sites must be banned.

This will have been explained or in the handout of joining instructions, so he has only himself to blame. That said, the IT department should have had that site blocked anyway.

We have a policy, whereby if you end up on an adult site by error, you had to inform IT immediately. This actually happened to a co-worker when they mistyped the name of a well known search engine. It was my quick reminder about procedure that enabled her to keep her job

I thought you had to have a verbal warning and a written warning before you were fired?

No they can go directly to final warning and dismissal if they feel it is appropriate Ruth. Like I said earlier there will have been some kind of acceptable use policy - I would imagine there is more to it than this one occasion though as there often is!

Thats a bit harsh ust to get fired for that but if he was told not to go on it and he did well the boss has kinda a point.

Thanks for the clarification Sunny

Like you, I can't help thinking that there must be more to it than this one incident!

Thats well harsh! I go on the PC at work all the time on here and on MSN! And my boss doesn't care...being fired for checking out CBB news is way out of order.
