babies crying (usually on public transport) are the worst sound imaginable... mostly because they make me imagine awful things happening to babies to make them shut up

I'd go for fingernails on a board, or a knife on a plate (same sort of thing). Goes through my body like nothing else.

Finger nails on a board doesn't bother me too much but cutlery scraping on a plate is another matter, even the sound of a knife and fork touching makes my teeth ache

Nails on a blackboard, cutlery against cutlery. Can we still say blackboard?, we can say whiteboard so I don't see why not.
