I got into an argument with some friends a couple of years ago about Michael Jackson's music; I said he didn't belong to our generation (I was born in 1991), my friends laughed and said of course he did, I said he didn't because his career height was long before we were born and that while he did have hits after we were born, we certainly weren't old enough to know much beyond how to tie our shoelaces, never mind who was famous and who wasn't, and it turned into such a heated row ...

Never really cared for his music much beyond casually acknowledging it was good, it just wasn't for me, I know for a lot of people it did but his death didn't really mean anything to me... I know that he was a hugely important figure in the music industry but he never felt like 'my' popstar to get behind, you know? So I found it hard to care among all the gushing tributes because I didn't grow up listening to his music, I didn't grow up wanting to be like Michael Jackson, I had different entertainers to look up to and while I'm sure there are people much younger than myself who look up to him, I think most people my age and younger weren't bothered by his death. To us, he was the punchline for jokes about paedophiles, plastic surgery and neurotic parenting. You just know that if he were still alive today, his name would be dragged through the dirt even more than it had already been with this historical sexual offences scandal in the UK.

I remember staying up until 2am to see what would happen and, unfortunately, it began to come through that he passed.
