I don't believe it was for any child, he's said that to try and cover embarrassment.

Then again I suppose a lot of parents by their kid a cool gadget that really they want to play with more than the child.

Xbox is constant shoot em ups and racers, Playstation and Nintendo consoles have much more variety to them imo.
