Yeah Clara is a really good companion tbf, this might take the focus off her, hope not though, she's got tons of potential and back story they could put into play.
If fans don't take to him he won't last I guess. Still not thrilled with Capaldi.

From Moffat's quote, it sounds like they're setting them up as the new Ian and Barbara, the show's first companions, who were also teachers at Coal Hill school, they did end up together but there wasn't an on screen romance as such.

I like the idea that him and Clara will be the 'new' Ian and Barbara. It's an ice little throwback to its origins.
