ITV has revealed it’s looking to increase the diversity of contestants and talent across it’s shows, including The X Factor.
While specific targets haven’t been issued for show runners, producers have been given “informal objectives”, reports Broadcast (paid link).
ITV’s Director of television Peter Fincham said this week we wanted to see the channel become the the poster child for diversity on TV here in Blighty.
“I have introduced to my commissioners annual objectives and objectives to promote diversity and reflect diversity, which I don’t think were there before,” he said. “It’s a subject much discussed within ITV.”
The ITV chief went on to tell the Broadcasting Press Guild that there was still a long way to go until shows “reflected” Britain.
“No broadcaster would say we’re happy with where we are on diversity, if we’re fully telling the truth. As a public service broadcaster, it’s our job to reflect the whole of Britain,” he explained.
The X Factor will air on ITV in the autumn.

I guess this also links with the article saying that the final judging position on XF is between Mel B and Alesha Dixon.
I wish C5 would take this approach with BB and try and cover all aspects of society in Britain with the housemates they choose.
