Something similar used to happen to my cat. It was because they clean themselves and get fur stuck in their throat. My cat then started to be sick, but all the fur wouldn't come up, so it looked like it was having a fit because it didn't know what was going on.

Scary stuff, but quite normal for cats I think. Not too sure about dogs sorry

You should maybe check if your dog's got rabies or something... which sounds offensive, but just the foaming mouth thing made me think rabies. That'd be really scary, sorry to hear that =[

This is what happend to my dog lasy year, she spun around and yeah aswell she had her mouth open so we thought she was choking but she was'nt and after the fit she was wimpering and throwing up, we then took her too the vets and they told us shes just going to get worse so she ended up getting put down so it kinda hurts talking about it.

I think Ziola might be right. Rabies is usually found in the nerves, which might have explained the siezure she had. And the white stuff is saliva, which is common with rabies.

Maybe take her to a vet?

My little Dinky has epilepsy it is awful and pretty scary when they have their first siezure in front of you. Dinky has grand mal seizures which are not a pretty sight at all.

Siezures can start in dogs of any age. If it starts before they are 2-3 years old it is generally epilepsy, or something simple like the dog having a temperature. After that age it generally (if it continues) needs more investigation.

Dinky is 12 and the diagnosis was a small brain tumor just over a year ago, she is fine and dandy and her siezures are now well managed with phenobarbitone. She used to take another medication but it ended up making her very ill and she now has liver damage from it, so do discuss the pros and cons of any medication with a vet before agreeing to start them.

If your dog has another siezure remember it will be as scared as you are so things you can do to help are:

use a cool (not cold) damp cloth and either rub its tummy or head with it while it is having the fit, this is because their temp rises dramatically while they are having a fit.

Talk gently to the dog letting it know you are there, stroke its back only as they can bite out either during or straight after a fit as they are unaware of what is happening

If a fit lasts longer than 10 mins the dog seriously needs to be taken to the vets, they may seem to last forever but time them, this is important they usually only last 2 -4 mins but it seems like a life time.

When Dinky has had a siezure I give her a spoonfull of hagan dazz vanilla ice cream with 2 drops of Dr Bachs rescue rememdy mixed in, it helps to settle them after a siezure and brings blood sugar levels back to normal. they can seem a bit off their game for a few days after a fit so lots of TLC is needed and a calm environment for them to recover in is important as well.

If you have anything else you want to ask Jono either U2U me or pop it on here

I'd take her to the vet just to be sure. Let us know how you get on.

My cat had epilepsy and like Sunny said, it not nice for them to go through.

She developed it after she was hit by car and then badly kicked on the street by kids .

This also caused her to have briandamage so with the epilepsy she was pretty messed up. But she was placed on Vallium (crazy I know) but it sorted her out.... no more fits and she went back to being kinda normal.

Valium is a great medication for cats to take as a preventative medication however for dogs it is used when they are having a siezure to stop them. I have rectal diazapam at home for Dinky (lovely I know) but it has its purpose.

aw thanks for all the messages everyone =]] i thought no one will reply hha. She's been sick all week, i was scared for in case it happened again so i sat next to her all night till 4 in the morning i had to get up at 9 to go out.. haha i read a book it can be caused by brain tumor, brain injury, eplempsy, poisoning (which i think it was). Causes twitching, crying out, salivation, vomiting, emptying of bladder or bowel. After she had it she got up i gived her some water she had drank all of it up bless her then went and got her monkey toy and started to play as normal, we are going to take her to the vets soon. kizwiz aww thats awful about your cat . My aunties dog had a fit, then a month later it had another one then another month later it had a fit non stop all night and she couldnt do anything.. so they got the vets out to put her down, although she was 14 years old mine is only 4. I hope it doesnt happen again because its awful to see what she had to go through, before i used to think why do you want to put you fog down thats mean, but now i realise that its to stop them going through the pain. Anyways thanks for helping me! =]]

Thankfully my dog and cat have never had this, but if they did I'd take them to the vet and I think you should do that for your dog just to be on the safe side.
Hope she gets better.

Remember Jono that even though it might be scary your dog will not be in pain while having the fit.

They can happen for lots of reasons and could even be down to something simple like a virus.

If you are not sure and the dog still seems poorly get it to the vets for a check up

Sunny is right, the cat or the dog almost go into a catatonic state. Just remember that the fit will take a lot out of the animal and that they will need peace and quiet.

I really hope everything works out for you x

Thing is Simon, pets are a part of the family. I mean, I'm not a dog lover, but I understand how people can love them. I have 3 cats, and I love them to bits. A lot of folk don't understand that, but pets are most certainly part of the family. I cried when our pet rats had to be put to sleep. That's how soft I am.
