I like him. Especially after he stood up to Audrey's blatant attempt at physical intimidation. Audleys putting his hands on James and George and saying there will be consequences was well out of order. If he did that to one of the girls or Leslie they would straight up to the diary room calling him out for physical intimidation. And they would be right. Audley is a massive guy and he used his physicality in the argument with James and George who were just having a laugh.
He is also the only person in there who takes Gary's hearing difficulties and life experiences into account. Gary is 70 years old, has had brain surgery, is a recovering drug addict and wears a hearing aid in both ears and isn't quite all there. James had his run in with Gary but he sat down and had an adult conversation with him. James is doing his best to keep Gary in the loop.
James is the father figure of the house. He is hard but fair.
