I want to get other peoples opinions on this.
A housemate in BB Australia, Emma, has been in the house for 5 weeks now. Before she went into the house she said that she wasn't close to her father and hadn't had any contact with him for years. Last week Emma's father passed away and his dieing wish was Emma not to be told of his death until she leaves the house. His funeral was on Monday. Do you think Emma should be told and given the option to leave the house? or Do you think BB should keep quiet and not tell Emma until she leaves the house (2 Months Max.)? |

Tricky situaton, if they wait until she leaves she could be angered at the fact that she wasn't told.
Allthough it was his wish for her not to know I dont really know |

Yes, but she may want to sue BB for not telling her. It's very awkward.

i agree that t's a difficult situation 4 bb to be in do they respect her fathers wishes or tell her? either way i dont think bb can win! no matter how close she was to her father will she regret not getting the chance to say a proper goodbye at his funeral? bless her

Australia's Big Brother has been engulfed by controversy after the show's producers refused to tell a contestant her father had died while she was on the show.
The father of Emma Cornell, 24, died of cancer more than a week ago. He was buried without his daughter attending the funeral. The producers' decision not to tell Emma has triggered widespread criticism but is not the first time the show has come under public scrutiny. Last year viewers were shocked to watch two male contestants grope a female housemate. The incident prompted Prime Minister John Howard to call for the show to be axed. Another series saw a woman who had suffered a still birth reduced to tears after being told to look after a doll. Big Brother producers say they did not inform Ms Cornell that her father had died because that was his dying wish. "He didn't want to ruin the experience for her," a friend told The Australian newspaper. "She might be upset when she comes out and finds out what has happened, but I think she'll understand." Friends say the pair had were only in contact by text over the last few years. The producers of Big Brother released a statement saying that "everybody who is part of Big Brother is very sympathetic to her situation". The controversy came as the British version of Celebrity Big Brother was censured by the TV watchdog Ofcom. It ordered the show to issue a series of on-air apologies over the racial abuse suffered by the Indian contestant Shilpa Shetty. The Bollywood actress was the victim of racist bullying by four fellow contestants. |

There is no real anwser to this, part of me thinks she should have been told but at the same time it was his dying wish not to tell her until she came out the house so it's a very tricky situation like most people have said.

I think Emma, the housemate in question, needs to know. She deserves the right to be told her father has passed away and to be given the optioned to stay or leave. Or at least to pay her respects to her father. I know that if i was in Emma position and BB didn't tell me and i would be so angry and upset. Emma is quite popular and could be in there for the full 4 months. Can you imagine leave the house in 4 months time to learn that you father had dies 3 months ago. This could also lead to Emma encountering serious psychological problems when she leaves the house.

Thats a Tricky Situation, a relation of mine who lives in Sydney said theres been a really bad going on in AU over this. I think they could of told her in a off camera diary room convosation about this happening and to give her the chance to leave or stay.

I think this is a horrible situation really tugging both ways but i think its a good idea to keep it from her until she comes out so it doesnt ruin the experience. and it would be horrible t.v to watch her get told,.

From what I heard before she went in she knew there was a possibility of it happening because he was very unwell and the family had discussed it beforehand and made that decison on not telling her. This is a one off chance in big brother and if they pulled her out she would always look back and think what might of been. I think with not telling her it is better as she can mourn when she comes out and be around her family etc.
If it was something "sudden" however they should tell her...for instance if it was a heart attack or something but she was aware that he was very sick before entering and she knew what could happen. |
