There are a lot people talking about hating other housemates. Here is the sort of comments I have found just looking at some of the posts in the threads.
"i really hate xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx!! they so annoyin! all she does is moan moan moan!!" "i hate xxxxxxxxx so much she has no regard to other peoples feelings." "the more 'entertaining' xxxxxxxxx gets, the more we will all hate them..." "There is only one person i hate and that is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx was such a snobby no-one! I still hate them!" "I know but i dont care. I hate them with a ****ing passion" Isn't such strong feelings going to create problems for the housemates when leave the house. Just like it did for Aisleyne back in February. http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/foru....php?tid=55671 So why do we do it when we don't even know these people and most use are not even likely to meet them? Are we talking about hate here or just a dislike for an individual? Isn't hate a emotion that starts wars? Are we using it in the right context? Should we be using the term at all to people we don't know? |

Big Brother is basicly a game show where only the public votes and decides who is the winner and who is evicted. Only the public watchs what is going on inside and sees how the housemates interact between them with an "outside" point of view. You can't say "I hate that housemate" because in fact it"s "I don't like how this housemate interacts with the others", that's it. It's normal that we dislike some because they are so different with different views of the world.

I think Big Brother Hate is different to general Hate.
We dont hate them as people, we hate them as housemates. |

I do think to myself why people are using the word 'hate' - persoanlly, I could only hate someone if they hurt me/upset me in a way, but the housemates aren't doing that to the public. Personally, I'd use a world like 'dislike' - it doesn't suggest as much hatred.

They sign up for the gig. That's why Davina sometimes sneaks a quiet chuckle when the boos are really bad. They knew what could have happened when they auditioned.

By signing up for Big Brother they put themself up for it. I don't do the whole "I hate this housemate" thing, but I don't blame others.

I agree Red - I have already said days ago that hate is a very strong emotion, certainly not one that is provoked in me by a tv show.

I used to say hate all the time but I have tried to stop. It is much to strong a word to use for someone you do not know. But I argee with Chris as well,we use it more as for housemates than them as people.

Well what about the usage of the word "Love"
****** is Brill i LOVE her The Official I Love **** Club !! Love you ******! Most have used it but it doesn't mean we really LOVE them like we love our friends or family. It's just a context we use to describe how we feel. Just like the word Hate, I agree it is a strong word, but then does that make the word Love any less of a strong word? |

The word hate doesn't just doesn't carry the same venom that it may have once. And that is especially true in the context of Big Bro and when being used on an internet forum. I have no complaints about people using hate to describe their emotions over a housemate. The vast majority don't mean they actually hate the person, especially at the moment when the show hasn't been on all that long. It's basically a form of hyperbole, using an overly strong word to try and really strike home how they feel. And it's arguably necessary on a forum since people cannot hear the tone of voice of the poster or see their facial expressions. The word just doesn't carry the same weight on a forum as it would if you screamed it at someone, right in their face!
And as JuicyLucy said, the same can be applied to the word "love". People saying they love a particular housemate doesn't mean they actually love them, in the traditional sense of unconditional devotion or committment to a person. Again, it's a just way to exaggerate one's feelings so as to compensate for the lack of face to face contact you have on a forum. Fortunately there are very few people in our lives that we will actually feel real hatred for. Someone has to have done something pretty damn bad to you for you to feel real, deep hatred for them! But the word will still be used to describe regular things that you simply don't like, e.g I hate boy/girl bands, I hate Liverpool FC, I hate all music made after 1980, I hate idiots in yellow cars with those overly noisy exhausts, I hate it when my DVD player refuses to play a disc especially when that disc is brand new with no scratches and I've just cleaned the laser on the player, I hate when the computer scores against me in the very last minute on PES6, I hate cauliflower, etc etc!!

People use the word love but don't really mean they love someone. The word hate used by BB posters I am sure in most cases is a shorthand way of saying they dislike someone.....A strong word I agree but I think it is seldom used in its pure meaning.....

I’m sure I have said “hate” when talking about a housemate, but what I mean is dislike. Like a lot of posters have said, Big Brother Hate is different than normal hate.
When I hate, as in HATE someone, it usually means I want them to die, and I couldn’t care less if they got hit by a bus. I don’t have that type of hate for anyone (oh maybe my ex boss, lol) but especially not for the housemates, as they have never done anything to hurt me or anything and I dont know them inside and out. So in future, if I do say “I Hate xxxxxxx” It usually means I dislike her, A LOT. Lol BB Hate is different to everyday hate. |

Yes, you're right!!Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
