373MPH
London to Scotland would take just a hour [A magnetic levitation (maglev) train in Japan has broken the world speed record for the second time in a week by hitting 373mph. The Central Japan Railway Company said the train managed 11 seconds at the top speed. It comes just days after the same train set a record by reaching 366mph on the company's test track.] http://news.sky.com/story/1466944/ma...d-record-again video on link Last edited by arista; 21-04-2015 at 08:46 PM. |

Not here for the crusty tube that sounds like it's about to fall apart.

But yeah, not sure I'd feel particularly safe hurtling along at nearly 400mph... |

London to Scotland in a hour (if we had this)
I would pay Ł100+ for that fast journey I could sign contracts say hello to Josy and LT then shoot back |

I thought these trains only worked in special tubes where the air had been removed and so there would be no air resistance.
The cost of building this in the UK would make HS2 by comparison look like a toy train set.

I don't think This is something we need in the UK, what we need is more trains in rush hour that run on time in all weathers and that cost less :

Before there are any thoughts about funding something like this I hope we can get to a place where people who pay thousands of pounds for a season ticket to go to work are actually able to get a seat. If you want to get from London to Scotland in a hour, fly. It's cheaper than taking the train.

Very much agree about the overcrowding at rush hour too. I remember getting on a rush hour train (major error, we should just have gone for dinner somewhere instead!) a few years ago with my then heavily-pregnant wife and very tired 2 and a half year old. Crammed in next to the door. Did ANY of the young, fit, 20-something year olds who had sprinted to the train to get a seat offer either of them somewhere to sit down? Did they ****! But then, as you say, it shouldn't be a problem. There should be enough seats for everyone and not people jammed in at the doors under someone's sweaty armpits. |
