The first thing they need to do is fire all those who have been responsible for the sorry mess this show has got itself into. After that they need to find creative people who are passionate about the show, understand it and - most importantly of all - what the fans want from it.
These would be my plans to save Big Brother for 2016: 1. A Back to Basics approach with a some modern ideas. What worked on those early series of Big Brother? Let's get the 24/7 live coverage out of the way first. It is perfectly obvious that in order to care about the housemates you must be able to familiarize yourself with them and get a good sense of who they are from the very start. That simply cannot be done without the live coverage. Which leads me on to... 2. An enormous effort must be put into making a great website with plenty of features that would make it worth paying a subscription charge for (though for the first series access should be for free). That would have to include at least 2 live feeds, a diary room feed for live nominations at a fixed time, a live web show at least twice a week, archival episodes from past series so you can re-watch your favourite series, exclusive interviews with celebs, friends and family members, as well as chat rooms and forums to interact with the show. 3. Axe Bit On The Side and replace it with the returning Big Brother's Little Brother. For some reason Channel 5 has a news programme on at 5 pm and then another at 6:30 pm. They should replace one with BBLB which can be hosted by Rylan, seeing as he is now a big part of Big Brother and I quite like him. In this slot it should do well thanks to the Neighbours/Home And Away audience tuning in as well as BB regulars. 4. The web show could be hosted by Iain Lee along with Luisa (I found them funny together) on Tuesday and Friday nights live after the main shows. It would be no holds barred and involve people calling and texting in live to discuss the show. It would feature Emma on Fridays, celebrity guests and evicted housemates. Luisa could also do the interviews for the web site like she did for last years show. 5. The housemates should be a diverse set but mostly in their mid 20s to early 30s. The housemates this year are too young, and Eileen being there in among them is ridiculous. They should include at least 3 good looking men (one older) for the female audience. And a good few of them should represent something of the spirit of the age and what is going on in the culture around us. They must be interesting, experienced, different but not so much so they are living on another planet and have strong views about things, not because I want slanging matches, but because I want more debate. 6. Nomination rules should be as they once were. The 2 or more with the most nominations face a public vote to evict. And that is that. NO playing around with it unless it involves the one and only big twist of the series. 7. The tasks should challenge the housemates and reveal something about their characters and ability to work with others rather than just humiliate them. This is not nor has it ever been I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here. With the return of the 24/7 coverage I would make the first task of every series the BB2 camp fire task which meant people were up 24/7 allowing viewers of all sorts to get to know them as they learnt about one another around the camp fire during the day and the night. 8. Drop the Saturday show and have an extended Sunday night HL show with the lunch time BBLB returning for 1 hour as it used to be. Give the evicted housemates much more to do throughout the week on BBLB. Afterall, it is those people we have begun to care about most, not the presenters or the guests. 9. A serious change in the approach to how HL shows are edited needs to take place. Scenes should be longer and with more interesting conversations that actually help casual viewers get to know these people. Marcus needs to stop being so comically over the top and they need to get rid of the music montages as they are tacky. 10. Stop worrying about anyone who says or does anything controversial so much. I understand there are guidelines, but kicking people off the show for minor rule breaks or silly antics that get a bit out of hand just puts people off. The viewing figures crashed after Emily was removed during BB8 and most recently half of the viewers will have thought Aaron's removal was way over the top. Responding in such an aggressive manner makes the housemates feel they are treading on egg shells and inevitably damages the show. 11. The show should begin in June when it is not up against the likes of BGT and young people are not in school sitting their exams. It should be well advertised with the Back To Basics idea made clear to try to drum up interest from old fans who fell out of love with BB years ago and also to get those who have been waiting for such a return excited. Okay , I get attacked for being negative about this show, so there's at least 10 things that I feel would drastically improve the show and make me much more positive about it. I also feel that it would make a considerable amount of viewers happier as well. And possibly bring some back and even make a few new fans. Last edited by Beetlejuice; 30-05-2015 at 09:18 PM. |

Back to basic wouldn't work these days.
But, reverting the show back to BB5-BB9 can still be done as the format has changed much. BB13 was the closest to this, IMO. |

Usually when people say Back to Basics, they mean having chickens and making their own bread. I don't think the format has changed much at all since BB5-BB9. It's just the production now a days. All they need is good tasks, good production, and good housemates. Then they have a series like BB5-BB9. Oh, and less twists. Just one massive twist halfway through the series. Like how BB13 had only the White Room. How BB6 had the Secret Garden, and how BB5 had the Bedsit. Admittedly BB7 and BB8 had many twists, which made the series messy. |

BB cannot put chickens in whilst the pie eater is in the house.

But Back to Basics also means BBLB on during the day to preview the later show (6:30 pm just seems like a much better time for a side show to me) and I really like the idea of having a web show with Iain that can go as mad and as extreme as it wants, which Lee would do. The website is essential for any Big Brother renewal. I just don't understand why they haven't done more with it. Last edited by Beetlejuice; 30-05-2015 at 09:30 PM. |
