Default 9/11 hero's husband returns wife's Woman of the Year award in Caitlyn Jenner protest

Quote:
The husband of a 9/11 hero has returned his wife's Woman of the Year award after Caitlyn Jenner was given the same accolade.

Moira Smith died during a rescue mission, after entering Tower Two in New York several times to evacuate people inside. Later that year, Glamour named her Woman of the Year posthumously.

But James Smith was insulted by the idea of a transgender person receiving the prize 14 years later.

In a Facebook post, he complained about Glamour's decision and made a point to refer to Caitlyn as "Bruce", using male pronouns.

"I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner 'Woman of the Year'," James wrote. "I find it insulting to Moira Smith's memory and the memory of other heroic women who have earned this award.

"At a time when we have women in the armed forces fighting and dying for our country, heroic doctors fighting deadly diseases, women police officers and firefighters putting their lives on the line for total strangers, brave women overcoming life-threatening diseases... the list of possibilities goes on.

"Is this the best you could do? I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium."

Glamour said that it stood by its decision to honour Caitlyn.

A spokeswoman told the New York Post: "Glamour's Women of the Year Awards recognise women with a variety of backgrounds and experience."

What an arsehole. What gives him the right to return his wife's accolades because of his own bigotry? That's more of an insult to his wife's memory than anything else.

I agree that there's no way on this earth Caitlyn Jenner deserved that award and it IS an insult to the women who won it before.

It's like awarding people like Kerry Katona "Mum of the Year" just laughable tosh.

BUT not because she's transgender, more because she just doesn't deserve it. To be so bigoted about her gender status on Facebook is incredibly stupid.

It is a slap on the face really, rewarding someone who is going through a struggle with her own personal life and making it public whilst ignoring women who are out there risking their lives and helping people.

Imo caitlin doesn't deserve the award because she's just another attention seeking Kardashian but not because she's trans tho.

a) Just because someone else was given the award (over a decade later) for something different doesn't make the award any less valid
b) The guy's transphobia ruins any point he's trying to make

What a pig using his wife's death to push some bigoted agenda he has

I'll refrain from the obvious insult...

I have to agree. I don't think Caitlyn Jenner was the most deserving of the award and that has nothing to do with the fact that she is transgender.

That said, the guy repeatedly referring to her as Bruce is pretty offensive and I don't think he should have a right to return his late wife's award either.

I suppose the guy could have worked out that magazine awards are purely marketing exercises to gain promo and have no status, credibility and are almost the opposite of what they purport to support

Exactly, he's not returning the award because she's a Kardashian, he's using his wife's tragic and heroic death to push his own agenda.

Caitlyn Jenner doesn't deserve the reward but to oppose it just on the grounds that she is trans is awful.

...but she was given the award for the fact that she's a high profile transgender person and has therefore automatically become a symbol/figurehead for trans rights etc in the public eye - which is what I imagine these kinds of accolades are for? This guy's just saying "well 9/11's more important!!!" and that's fine if that's his opinion, but he doesn't have to be a jerk about it

i get what he's saying, but hes only using his views because he's transphobic. i dont think Caitlyn deserves it either, but I'm not going to go out there and use her birth name or whatever.

Sorry to "PC, I will happily play along with the whole 2015 trans LGBT Nazi brigade" eg using cis, using people's chosen pronouns, telling boys they are not boys but 'NB' blah blah.

But to give an award to someone who competed in a sport women could not compete in, someone who spent 65 years as a bloke and it's benefits as opposed to women who have often faced discrimination due the obvious biological differences men. It would be intriguing when a top male sports like Tiger Woods (golf), or Novak Djokovic (tennis) decides he's a woman, love to see female Caitlyn Jenner groupies reaction when they defeat females like Inbee Park or Serena Williams.

PS why are transgender activists so eager to shut down the growing fact of transgender regretters and detransitioning people.

PS I strongly most people don't really believe the transgender thing but politely patronise, so not to upset or hurt
