I don't get why Focus gets slated so badly, I mean sure it's a bit of a retread of Problem but reusing the same sound never hurt Avril Lavigne or Pink or Kesha or One Direction, did it?

Difference is all of those have fairly unique styles and she does not. She's retreading Xtina/Mariah tropes and riding the "trumpet hook" train into the ground.

Why excuse any of those I mentioned in my last post for harvesting a particular sound but then dismiss Ariana for using trumpets as a focal point in two songs? I mean I get that it was a gamble to try it again with a lead single and that the gamble didn't pay off but it's a perfectly fine pop song with a chorus that borders on silly and annoying, no worse than say Cheryl Cole's Crazy Stupid Love for similar flaws.

They all manipulated their sound tbf. For example for P!nk, So What, Sober, Bad Influence, Please Don't Leave Me, Glitter in the Air etc were all different sounding songs all in the same era
