Hunt for four Afro-Caribbean men after violent attack

A YOUNG mum was gang-raped in the street by FOUR men as she walked her dog near her home.

The attackers took turns to hold down and rape the 30-year-old victim after grabbing her from behind and pushing her to the ground. All four suspects were described as of Afro-Caribbean appearance. One of them had dreadlocks reaching down to his lower back. The rapists left the victim lying on the pavement. She managed to stagger home and call a friend for help.

The woman was attacked at around 12.40am yesterday while walking her golden Labrador. Detective Inspector John Mellon, leading the hunt for the rapists, said: "We are warning women in the area to be very careful as it is possible the gang could strike again. "This was a horrific and frightening attack which has left the victim traumatised. It seems to be a crime of opportunity. The woman did not know her attackers and was not aware of being followed. She didn't see or hear her attackers approaching. She was approached from behind and pushed to the ground. The men partially removed the victim's denims before taking it in turns to sexually assault her. They took turns holding her down and they all raped her. There was very little dialogue during the attack."

The rape took place in Overnewton Street, Yorkhill, Glasgow. It lasted around seven minutes. Each man violently raped the woman while two others held her down. When it was over, the gang, who were unarmed, ran off towards Lumsden Street in the direction of Yorkhill children's hospital.

The victim, a single mum with a primary school-aged child, was left covered in scratches and bruises but managed to walk home. Her dog had fled the scene and was cowering outside her house when she arrived. The woman rang a friend and police were alerted. Cops arrived within minutes and took the victim to Stewart Street police station.

Mr Mellon said: "She had injuries consistent with being pushed to the ground and held down. She was examined by a police surgeon but was not taken to hospital. We are still waiting for the results of forensic tests."

The woman spent hours describing her attack to police. She was resting at home yesterday before going for a further medical examination. The victim was able to give a detailed description of the first man to rape her. He was in his early 20s, more than 6ft tall and had long dreadlocks reaching down to his lower back. The man was wearing a red t-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.

Mr Mellon said: "We are very keen to get that description out to the public."

The other three suspects are all described as being Afro-Caribbean. Mr Mellon appealed for witnesses to the attack, which took place in a street overlooked by tenements.

Women in the area were living in fear last night. One 32-year-old said: "It is really scary. We never get any trouble here. It's normally quite quiet. I'm definitely going to take more care and get taxis to my door from now on. It must have been terrifying for that poor girl."

Another local resident, a 21-year-old woman, said she often walked her dog in Overnewton Street. She said: "I've lived here all my life and can't believe this has happened. I definitely won't be out walking alone."

Another neighbour, whose children use the playpark at the end of Overnewton Street, said yesterday: "The police told me it was nothing to worry about but my kids have been playing in the park alone and anything could have happened. We all should have been warned."

There was a heightened police presence in the Yorkhill area last night. Forensics officers scoured the crime scene for clues.
