Lets use tonights most talked about HM as an example. If the final 2 is Andy and Alex. Andy seems to be a hugely controversial character. Many will vote him to win, however so many really dislike him that they will be in the 'anyone but Andy' brainset and thus vote for Alex. I suspect more people hate Andy than like him, thus Alex wins. Not as he is popular, but as he isn't Andy.
Replace Andy with whichever marmite character you want...works all ways.
