It's based on 6 degrees of separation, but about Kevin Bacon instead. It's kind of random but it's basically because he's been in so movies, you can pick pretty much any actor and be able to link them to Kevin Bacon using the starting actor's co-stars etc, and however many links it takes to get to kevin is the 'Bacon Number'
