DERMOT O’LEARY got the job on X Factor after impressing a trio of celebrity judges himself.

Simon Cowell flew the presenter in LA and then took him to dinner with his America’s Got Talent colleagues.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Dermot. “There was me, Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Jerry Springer!

“For me, it was a night of legends. I would have paid for a night like that in an auction!”

Dermot revealed that he and Simon clicked immediately, and says the feared judge is a “genuine, down-to-earth guy”.

And he defended his new pal’s sharp tongue.

“He’s the same kind of person as Gordon Ramsay, in that they might be rude and curt,” said loyal Dermot.

“But there’s a reason why they’re rude and curt. It’s all about quality control.”
